PROGRAM:
DAY 1 HUARAZ -
VAQUERIA - TUCTU.
The port of entry to the trail is Huaraz, a nice town in the Andes,
surrounded by these beautiful mountains, called Cordillera Blanca. The
road goes to the north in the Callejón de Huaylas entering in Yungay,
up to the area called Llanganuco, in the National Park Huascaran, where
is located these two lakes, Chinancocha and Orconcocha. Going up on this
zigzag road to the Pass of Portachuelo de Llanganuco (4,750 mts.) and in
to the valley of Morococha arriving to Vaqueria.
From this point the trek starts, which the trail goes through the
Huaripampa Valley, visiting this comunity which they dedicate to grow
Lupinus, which this bean is one of the great dishes in this area,
passing meadows and forest of Quenuales, arriving to Tuctu. Camp
DAY 2 TUCTU - HUECROCOCHA
This is a long day, very early in the morning,
the hike start up to the Pass of Alto de Pucaraju
(4,600 mts),where the location of this mirador permits you to see these
snow-capped mountains in the Santa Cruz valley. From there its starts
going down into a large valley which was part of the Inca trail of the
Huaylas from Pomabamba to the coast, arriving to the Huecrococha lake.
Camp.
DAY 3 HUECROCOCHA - JANCAPAMPA.
Going into a valley, that will head towards the Tupatupa Pass (4,500 mts),
getting excellent views of the Taulliraju and Pucahirca peaks. The road
unwinds deep in the valley arriving to the Jancapampa community, located
below the east side of the Pucahirca. Camp.
DAY 4 JANCAPAMPA - HUILCA.
Walking into the valley and heading up this gorge that comes out to a
plateau where sometimes its possible to see Alpacas, that are raised in
that sector. Continues up to a next valley that lays next to the Jatun
Pass (4830), going up this wall that is part of the Pucahirca over to
Huilca. Camp.
DAY 5 HUILCA - MOYOBAMBA.
Day starts with a walk towards the end of Huilca, where this community
also dedicates to raise Alpacas. The road continues
to the Moyobamba Pass (4600), heading
to the valley next to the Cara Cara Pass. Camp.
DAY 6 MOYOBAMBA - CEDROS.
This day the start up is toward the Cara Cara Pass (4800),passing this
old Inca construction which maybe it was a control point in the net of
the Inca trails in this area. This pass is one of the Highlights of the
trip. Once arriving to the pass it has a great view of this section of
mountains, the Quitaraju and the Santa Cruz, that will be in front of
you. At the left side the Jancarurish and the Alpamayo peak
(5947 mts.) will appear making this the photo day which includes the
sunset, ending in the Cedros valley . Camp.
DAY 7 CEDROS - OSORURI.
Early in the morning the Alpamayo is above the campsite, and as the
trail continues it will fade away the site of this wonderfull mountain,
starting the climb to the Osoruri Pass (4630 mts.). The valley called
Cedros once had a administrative center of the Incas, Ruinapampa, were
you can see the area of housing and the terraces (andenes) built for
agriculture purposes. From Osoruri it will be seen the Cordillera Blanca
and if the afternoon is clear it will have a great sunset. Camp.
DAY 8 OSORURI - HUISHCASH.
This day the climb starts toward the Toro Pishta Pass (4700 mts) going
over and starting to view the Cullicocha lake, which has this turquoise
color, and surrounded by the Santa Cruz peaks. This trail leads out of
the Cordillera Blanca , also having the Milluacocha peak at the other
side of the Cedros valley, and coming out to Huishcash,
seen across the Cordillera Negra and different towns in the
hills specially Huaylas were it was the conjunction of the Inca trail to
the coast. Camp.
DAY 9 HUISHCASH - HUALCAYAN - HUARAZ.
Starting early the walk down the valley towards Hualcayan, a tambo on
the way to Huaylas. This town is located next to an archaeological site.
As the trail takes you down you will have this view of the Callejon de
Huaylas (Corridor), at the bottom the Santa River and you can visualize
the entry to one of the tunnels in the Cañon del Pato road. Arriving to
Hualcayan and heading to Caraz, and ending back in Huaraz.
*NOTE: The trail can be done the other way around, on request.
